Women in Sports: Caitlin Clark

red dress to collect Wooden Award ...

Welcome to Women in Sports. My name is Madelyn McCall and I am a collegiate athlete at Heidelberg University. I am passionate about all things sports-related, especially when it comes to women athletes. This blog will discuss different female athletes and their impacts on sports.

The first Athlete I will be discussing is Caitlin Clark. She has accomplished so much for only being 22. Clark has impacted women's basketball in many different ways. One of her most notable accomplishments is raising total viewership for women's basketball.

Clark has inspired so many young girls to play basketball. Clark plays the game a lot differently than most female players play. She is known for her consistent logo 3-pointers, but that's not all she can do. She is a great floor leader who can space out the court and pass with ease and accuracy.

While her collegiate career at Iowa University recently ended, it's important to talk about all she's accomplished. As reported by ESPN, these are the NCAA records that she has broken; career scoring leader, single-season record for 3-pointers, became the first player in NCAA tournament history to have multiple 40-point games, and has achieved the most 30-point games by any man or woman in Division in the past 25 years.

Those are just NCAA records that she has set, but she has set even more at Iowa University. Such as becoming Iowa’s all-time leading scorer. She has earned a variety of different awards as well. Clark already has her jersey retired at Iowa University and her name on the court.

Clark has won the Naismith Women's College Player of the Year in 2023 and 2024. She was also Best Female College Athlete at the ESPYs awards in 2023. These are just some of her more notable accolades. Clark has done so much more not only for women's basketball but for female athletes as a whole.

Her impact on women's basketball has been widely known as the “Clark effect”. For example, the Iowa game against UCONN in the women’s final four brought in 14.2 million viewers. The highest number of viewers in NCAA women’s basketball history. Along with that Clark has been selling out arenas all season. Of the 32 games played during the regular season, Clark sold out 30 of those games.

The difference that Clark has made in women’s basketball is admirable, especially because she just finished her collegiate career. However, she is already starting to make an impact in the WNBA. As reported by ESPN again, the Indiana Fever has the first overall draft pick. Since Clark declared for the draft, Indiana Fever’s first game at Connecticut Sun ticket prices increased by 91%.

While Clark still has a professional career ahead of her, she has achieved so much. She brought in more attendance and viewership for women’s college basketball. Has broken numerous records at Iowa University and the NCAA.

  3. Maddy, I love how passionate you are about women's sports. Starting your first blog post about Caitlin Clark was a great idea since she is very popular and talked about today. I heard about the WNBA Draft and saw that she was the first-round pick, which is amazing. I also love how you noticed how she raised the views on women's basketball, which is a great stepping stone.

  4. This is a great topic that should appeal to many in class. And this is a good first post. Keep in mind that for attribution, you want more than "As reported by ESPN"--add some specifics. And if the story is available online, link to it. Also, you have a stat at the end of your post without attribution (and another stat earlier)--where did you get that info about ticket prices. Your images should have attribution as well. And finally, use UConn for AP Style (not UCONN).
