Three NCAA women's college basketball championships, and one unbeaten season, are just a few of Dawn Staley's accomplishments. Staley is currently the women's basketball head coach at South Carolina University. Before her coaching career, she had a successful career as a player.

Staley played for Virginia and led her team to three final-four appearances. On the Olympics website an article called, “Basketball Greatness Personified”, written by Chloe Merrel, discusses Staley's career. Staley played for Virginia University, even though she did not win any championships there she earned other awards. She earned two Naismith trophies, and two ACC Player of the Year awards, and was also named the NCAA Tournament Most Outstanding Player in 1991.

After her collegiate career, she was drafted into the WNBA and played for the Charlotte Sting. She earned five all-star awards during her time in the WNBA. She also made one WNBA Championship final appearance. Staley also made three Olympic appearances for Team USA. She played in Atlanta 1996, Sydney 2000, and Athens 2004. Winning gold in all appearances. In Athens, she was named the 2004 USA Basketball Female Athlete of the Year.

In 2008, Staley was named South Carolina's women's basketball head coach. When she was named head coach, she focused on the culture of her team and fans. She wanted games to be just as busy as men's games. She wanted people to support women’s basketball. During her time as head coach the number of fans and crowds increased significantly.

With this culture she created in South Carolina, her team has been successful. She led the team to many NCAA tournament appearances. This includes winning her first championship in 2017. She won two other championships in 2022, and 2024. In 2024, she had an undefeated season.

Staley is also only one of 27 women to be inducted into the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame. Along with being named Naismith Player of the Year. Staley has also been named Naismith Coach of the Year four times.

Staley has been a positive influence on women's basketball. During her time as a player, she was exciting to watch. Then as a coach, she was able to change the culture at South Carolina University by increasing the number of fans and crowds. She is a great advocate for women's sports.

  1. I love Dawn Staley! The fact that she found success as an athlete and then took what she learned and found even more success as a coach let alone in woman's sports speaks volumes. She is extremely talented and someone who is not only a role model for women but men as well!
